Piggery – flexible storage and release of effluent
Since 1989 this piggery has been able to manage the effluent of one part of the business, to help nurture the other side – growing a variety of crops. Each year, different conditions dictate when effluent can be released and in what quantities from the ATS to provide fertilizer and nutrients for the fields.

The massive capacity of 600,000 litres provides the ability to store up to a whole years' worth of effluent in a controlled environment – odourless, sealed and with no external loss of nitrogen or nutrients. So when the conditions allow, the crops can gain a home-grown fertilizer with little effort.

Size of featured ATS: 600,000 litres

Stockholm Water – remote effluent storage and treatment
Sweden has one of the strictest environmental policies in the world. The ATS is used here for human urine staging in order to kill off the hormones and protect nutrients for use on local crops.

The completely sealed storage mitigates odour problems and maintains valuable nutrient levels allowing for disposal of effluent on farmland..

Size of featured ATS: 150,000 litres per unit

Firewater storage – it’s like having 100 fire trucks parked out the back
The Adelaide Hills is guaranteed each year to be ravaged by bush fires; it is a part of life in the community. This private resident has installed an ATS with the capacity of 200,000 litres, along with strategically placed sprinklers and hoses to protect the house.

The completely sealed storage protects the quality of the water, with no light able to generate algae or bacteria that could create “sludge". So if or when a bush fire strikes, the resident has every confidence that no clogs in the system will occur.

Temporary storage for infrastructure build
Here the ATS is in a basic form. Simply rolled out on reasonably level ground (approximately 3 degree gradient) to store hundreds of thousands of litres of water for use on the building site.

Once the work is completed, the ATS is easily rolled back up and transported to the next site.

Cherry orchard irrigation
Water management for this cherry orchard is helped by ATS, because the water stored is of the highest quality and the capacity is a massive 250,000 litres to provide buffer storage for irrigation..

The completely sealed storage protects the quality of the water, with no light able to generate algae or bacteria that could create “sludge” and contaminate the irrigation infrastructure.

Biogas capture and release for power generation
The ATS is positioned next to a Digester and serves two key purposes. Firstly, the ATS captures organic waste overflows in airtight conditions. Secondly, the ATS captures the remaining biogas through to a compressor that fires a gas turbine, generating 100Kw of power.

Market Garden for highest quality produce
The ATS provides high quality water for irrigation and allows for buffer storage to take advantage of lower electricity prices during off peak times. The grower pumps water from the bore into the ATS during the night, for use during the day.

Using the ATS has provided the grower with the opportunity to gain the water quality accreditation SQF 2000, which was not possible with an open dam. With most of the water stored under the ground, the ATS blends into the surrounding environment.

Buffer supply for drought proofing small community
This ATS delivers high quality water for a small community in a remote area for drinking, cleaning and fire protection. Installation was very easy by utilising an old dam. Because this ATS weighs only 300 kilograms, placing it in a location serviced by just a track was not difficult.

With the whole exercise taking less than 2 days, the community gained much needed capacity quickly, with added value of a cheaper price than traditional storage solutions.
